“You know what? I’m the man still, I can go do this.”
Monday night Drew Lock led the Seattle Seahawks on their longest touchdown drive of the season, 92 yards, ending in a touchdown pass with 28 seconds left to lift Seattle over the Phildealphia Eagles, 20-17.
It was Lock’s first win as a starting quarterback since December 13, 2020.
He was traded to Seattle from Denver during the 2022 offseason, and didn’t appear in a game the following year. Until week 13 of this season, he’d only played in two games and attempted just four total passes.
Point is, if there was anyone you could expect to have a crisis of confidence, it was Drew Lock.
He admitted as much after the game, saying (I’m paraphrasing) that doubts began to creep in after he went nearly two years between starts. But he kept showing up, kept working, and after being pressed into action two weeks ago and performing well in a loss, realized he can still do this. He can still play quarterback in the National Football League.
Look, a lot of people think sports are silly, and I get that. Honestly, there are times when I question why I care so much about a game. But there really are life lessons to be learned on the field, whether you’re a player or not. I think what we can learn from Drew Lock is, be your own biggest cheerleader.
The only person in the world whose opinion you can 100 percent control is your own. There is literally nothing productive about negative self-talk. I’m sure during that 2022 season where Lock was stapled to the bench he had people in his ear and in the media telling him to give it up, he’d had a good run. But he didn’t listen, and now, at the very least, has one more NFL win under his belt.
No one is more invested in your dreams than you are, and no one has more at stake than you do. Self-belief is the first and biggest step on the journey toward accomplishing those dreams, and sometimes the best thing you can do is tell yourself, “You know what? I’m the man (or woman) still, I can go do this.”
I’m going to try to be more like Drew Lock.
